Pelagic sediments - archives for ocean and climate history
Pioneering studies of modern oceanic deposits and of deep-sea sediments in mountain ranges date back more than 100 years. An understanding of deep-sea or pelagic sedimentation in earth history requires a thorough understanding of physical, chemical and biological oceanography. The lecture will use the earth history of the Calcite Compensation Depth (CCD) as a starting point for a discussion on feedbacks between climate, oceanography and sedimentation. Case studies, all characterized by major changes in deep-sea sedimentation, include the Eocene-Oligocene transition, the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum and the Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events.
