The research programme covers palaeontology of selected groups of organisms (diatoms, silicoflagellates, nannoplankton, radiolarians, molluscs, echinoderms, corals, and vertebrates), sedimentary geology of Mesozoic and Cainozoic carbonate platforms and basins, and geobiology of Tertiary and Recent terrestrial carbonates. In 2010 and 2011 the following topics were studied: Triassic and Jurassic stratigraphy of the High Karst and Budva zones in Montenegro (Črne et al. 2011, Geol. Soc. Amer. Bulletin); Jurassic and Cretaceous stratigraphy of the Bled Trough in NW Slovenia (Kukoč et al., Bull. Soc. Geol. France, in press); Jurassic and Cretaceous stratigraphy of the Pichakun Basin in SW Iran (Robin et al. 2010, Geol. Soc. London Spec. Pub.), Triassic and Jurassic radiolarian biochronology (O'Dogherty ey al. 2010, Geol. Soc. London Spec. Pub.Carter et al. 2010, Palaeo3); Sedimentology and palaeoecology of Palaeocene-Eocene carbonate platform in SW Slovenia (Zamagni et al. 2012, Palaeo3); Stratigraphy, palaeontology and palaeoecology of Neogene successions in the western part of the Central Paratethys (Bartol 2010, Micropaleontology); Quaternary sediments in Slovenia; Mortality dynamics of cave bear; and Calcification products of plant roots in Palaeogene calcretes and present-day calcareous soils; Processes of formation of dolomite speleothems and calcite moonmilk deposits in caves in Spain and Slovenia (Martín-Pérez et al., in review).

Basic research, representing the major part of activities, has been carried out in the frame of the national research programme Palaeontology and Sedimentary Geology, funded by the Slovenian Research Agency. The institute has further collaborated in two international projects (DEDI II and ARZENAL). Applied research has been focused on geological monitoring of the motorway section Koper-Izola (funded by DARS d.d. – Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia). An applied study has been newly introduced in relation to food science that is aimed to test different siliceous sediments as potential environmentally friendly insecticides (Rojht et al. 2010, Int. J. Food, Agric. Environ.).

In 2010 and 2011 the results were presented at nine scientific meetings and are published in 24 papers. Under the auspices of ZRC SAZU and the Geological Society of Slovenia, the Ivan Rakovec Institute of Palaeontology and the Karst Research Institute jointly organised the Third Slovenian Geological Congress (September 16-18, Bovec).

The institute closely collaborates with other institutes in Slovenia (Department of Geology at Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, and Biotechnical Faculty of the Univeristy of Ljubljana, Geological Survey of Slovenia) and also has a well established cooperation with several foreign institutes from Austria, Croatia, Germany, Italy, France, Norway, Spain and Switzerland. Four researchers are full or part time teachers at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana.
